The Sun City Country Club was the first country club Del Webb ever built. Our tree-lined golf course is the grandfather of all the country clubs now in existence at the numerous Sun Cities around the country. As they say: “We’re No. 1!”
While Del Webb was a visionary, country clubs were never part of his original plan. But a crisis arose here in his original Sun City. Too many golfers. Not enough golf courses.
In the early 60’s the only golf courses in Sun City where the North and South courses. The local, golf-playing public was up in arms about how hard it was to get on at either facility. Another surprise for Del Webb was that many incoming residents had belonged to private country clubs and liked that environment and why wasn’t there a country club to join in Sun City?
So in May of 1964, a brave group of men got together to form an exploratory committee on how to get a country club built. As you might suspect it wasn’t easy. There are always people around who can be counted on to be against whatever there is to be against.
But the bottom line was that Del Webb saw the country club as a new, lucrative part of his development formula. He could sell more golf course lots and create another way to draw in retirees.
On November 12th, 1965, the Sun City Country Club board of directors signed a letter of intent with Del E. Webb Development Corp. The original course and buildings cost less than $800,000 to complete. On March 4th, 1967, the Sun City Country Club was dedicated. Within six months all the memberships were sold and a waiting list was created. From then on it took about a year to gain membership.
Every Sun City development since has had a least one private country club as part of the plan.
We have played this course many times and always enjoy it. They have a friendly staff, reasonable prices, and LOTS OF TREES! Accuracy is important.
Have been a member now for 3 years and never tire of this golf course (Canadian snowbirds). We play the back tees which are just over 6200 yards. The slope of 120, in our estimation, is much too low as there are a multitude of challenges and ways to get into trouble! (can you say eucalyptus?) We are pleased to see the ownership group is continually attempting to improve the quality of the golf course and hope that continues.
Ray, Anne and the ProShop staff are very friendly and accomodating. Membership dues and green fees are very reasonably priced making this a great value. Highly recommended!
great value. played with owner and kicked his butt. if lived closer would join
The course if very tight for an Arizona course. But it is fair and the pace of play is usually very good. 4 hours or less for 18 holes. Course is in excellent condition. Good value
This great course presents a real challenge to be straight and long with it's tree lined fairways. Good pace of play. Lots of friendly golfers.
The best course in the valley for both playability and value.
Well guarded by tree lined fairways. Excellent practice areas.
Excillent!!! Good shape! Long courses
It's an awesome course. More than fair in pricing. Good management. The fairways and greens are in good condition always in the summmer and the winter.
very friendly and afordable.
Played this course with my dad about a week ago and it was pleasant. The greens are kind of slow but it has wide fairways and the rough is not too thick. Plenty of room and low key players makes for a nice golfing day.
I played in a 18 hole mens club event on the 26 th.It is so much fun ,that is a good reason to play here but the best is as a single I get to meet new friends tom
I love this course! Well worth the drive from anywhere in the valley. The people are so nice and they even have a cart girl on the weekends now. I will be back soon, thank you so much for the great experience.
A great golf course with lots of mature shade trees that give it the feel of a mid western mature course. The length is perfect. Every fairway is a challenge. Accuracy is more important than distance. Better to be short and in a fairway than long and behind a tree.
Played this course for the first time at the GolfMixer and had a good time. Good mix of holes, from par 3 to par 5. Challenging but not impossible.
Great course to play, lots of shade.
The first Country Club in Sun City Arizona. Not what you expect to find in the desert. Mature trees (don't hit it in there)! Great condition. Surprising old style greens with plenty of character and sublte undulations. Good test from any teebox. The minute you get a little complacent this course will take a bite out of you. Always fun to play. Make sure it is on your playlist.
This is a great course. It may be the oldest course but it is the best!
Long, flat, beautiful course. Pictures here don't do it justice. Great course to work on straight shots. The trees eat balls. Challenges come in many forms. Pace of play is excellent, staff is friendly and helpful, club house is fun, food in dinning room is delicious. Greens look easy but watch out! Message to maintenance crew - Please try to keep the cups green level after cutting to prevent hilly lips. Very frustrating. Otherwise, very enjoyable and rewarding course!
